The popularization of digital photography and its diffusion through new technologies has added a new element to a still open debate: that of the status of the image as a document of reality. The new documentary image “rehearses new records, motives and formats to deepen social aspects that are obscured by the huge amount of images that are produced and consumed daily. Along with the photographic series, other tools such as videos, cartographies, diagrams or web pages integrate some of these proposals. The selected authors and groups use these vectors of the documentary image to deal with aspects such as territory, environment, peripheries, identity, violence or borders. Their projects cast new glances and generate unexpected imaginaries and stories about communities, places or conflicts previously lacking in visibility.
The exhibited works were endowed with the Aid to Production and Publication for Documentary Image Projects of the “la Caixa” Foundation. They have been developed under the supervision of tutors of the agency Magnum Photos and the result of each of them has seen the light in the form of a photobook.
FotoPres “la Caixa”, an international reference in the field of documentary photography, inaugurates a new stage with this 19th edition. After its initial dedication to photojournalism, it now expands to a broader scope: the new role of the photographic medium – in a world marked by mass access to its production and consumption – and the consequent re-thinking, often multidisciplinary, of registers Traditional documentary image.
