The gynoecium is the set of female organs of a flower. The name comes from the ancient Greek gynaeceum which was the part of the house reserved for women, usually the innermost room of the building. The women of the house, both maids and slaves, met and spent a good part of the day, and often received the visit of the mistress of the house on the nights when she was not with her husband. We can imagine that it was here that the women exchanged conversations, sometimes joyful at times sad, jokes about men, pains of love, desires and longings. All these female voices are lost in time, but they should not be very different from what we can imagine today.
In the exhibition Shadows in the Gineceo, we present works by Christine Borland, Susy Gómez, Alex Katz and Antoni Tàpies. In all of them, from the perspective of each artist, there is a reflection on the feminine world: the beauty of youth, the passage of time, erotic elements such as hair, maternity …
