7 pm: Introduction by Maren Polte, University of Bern
The Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý (1926 – 2011) appeared at the beginning of the 21st century comely in the art world after Harald Szeeman had shown him at the Seville Biennial in 2004 and Tobia Bezzola gave him a solo exhibition at the Kunsthaus in Zurich in 2006. Many large museums followed and realized further exhibitions in the following years. It was not until after his death in 2011 that it became quieter around him.
Tichý’s work remains a mystery even today, but all approaches and interpretations fail because he himself always refused to make a statement. This refusal and the power of the self-contained work make Tichý always an exciting and touching discovery.
As of 15 September, Photobastei is now dedicating to him a comprehensive solo show with some 140 works from his oeuvre, consisting of several thousand photos.
