Oskar Kokoschka (1886 – 1980) is today one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His lasting legacy for the art production of the post-war period up to the present is undisputed and yet enigmatic: in Europe, which had been shattered by two world wars, and where realistic art had fallen into disrepute, Kokoschka remained intrepidly committed to the recognition of figurative art. He adhered to the integral force of an art beyond state propaganda, which is reflected in his entire work. In Kokoschka’s words, “Official art is always kitsch because it serves the anonymous buyer, thereby eliminating the experience.” “Perhaps the contemporary escape from objectivity is less to explain with an inability to form and more properly with a shrinking of the capacity to experience . “
