From the 9th to 14th October, the autonomously organized event week UP AGAINST! will take place in Zurich. The idea is that there is no fixed program, but the program can be supplemented and multiplied with own contributions, events, actions or other experiments.
At the same time, a temporary a-ggregation of numerous materials around subversive theories and forms of practice is emerging. In root-like structure and organic growth as a collaborative process, which can now be visited and extended all through October and can be supplemented individually. The temporary room is located in UpState, at Flüelastrasse 54.
«UP AGAINST!» Is an invitation to use the events in October in a variety of ways to rediscover the possibilities of subversive theory and practice! In a shared discussion, and in a lively exchange of the different forms of thought, priorities and perspectives, by all possible forms, from their own initiatives, interests and approaches. We want to break the divisions of different social environments of individual anarchist positions and to direct the flow of subversive energies and conflicts into a common tension field, free of discrimination and oppression. Traversed by the different interests and approaches to revolutionary perspectives, it is an attempt to mutually understand each other, to individually complement, or deliberately set apart.
We have been meeting regularly for several months, deepening our understanding in discussions on social criticism, anarchist theories and their forms of practices, while outlining new ideas and points of reference for the events in October. «We» means a loose group in which people with different backgrounds and interests participate, and start to get involved over the past period and process, and as a loose group further on continues to expand and deepen.
The starting point for the discussions of our meetings were the discussions about the anarchist/artist group and magazine “Black Mask” (1966-1968, NYC), as well as the resulting militant anarchist group “Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker” (1968-1970, NYC), and their historical context in which they arose. “Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker” was essentially a loose confederation of affinity groups, distributed across a series of occupied houses and sleep-ins, living and organizing in the Lower East Side. The term «Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker» is borrowed from the poem «Black People» by LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), and refers to the oppression and repression that people of color in the US of the late 60s were experiencing daily in situations of controls and arrests, mainly by white police officers. This debate prepared a starting point of feminist and anti-racist criticism on the basis of which we want to analyze the historical context and to make visible other subversive theories and forms of practice that were then present as well as in our present, in opposition to the constructed normality and their domination systems.
During the week from 9th to 14th October, Ben Morea will be our guest and spend time together in discussions and small talks, to discuss and to consider critically the historical context of “Black Mask” and “Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker” and further points of references, in the past and present.
We see this as a means of identifying reference points within the history, to connect them with everyday and current events, and making new and existing individual approaches visible to each other. We see this as a helpful possibility to build a self-understanding based on the exclusion from the constructed normality, its categories and domination systems – and thus to find oneself within the history, and to build on the lessons of the past. We understand the week UP AGAINST! as a process, of autonomously organized events in October, of the creation of liberated temporary spaces, and the discovery of unexpected paths.
