Coffee from Helvécia

29 August 2017 - 28 January 2018
Johann Jacobs Museum, Seefeldquai 17, 8034 Zürich Schweiz + Google Map

African Brazil, St. Galler embroidery and a modernist utopia One of the largest coffee plants of the 19th century, located in the Brazilian north-east, was firmly established in Swiss hands. However, what exactly took place there is largely unknown. Today's state of Helvécia hardly reveals the voluntary and involuntary forms of work and life that have developed between European immigrants and African slaves and their free offspring. A century later, another coffee plantation will be the scene of a social…

10 November 2017 - 28 January 2018
Kunsthaus, Heimplatz 1, 8001 Zürich Schweiz + Google Map

Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, ‘plein air’ painting, Impressionism – these are still the main stylistic labels attached in the German-speaking world to French painting of the 19th century. The artists working in those styles – figures such as Géricault, Delacroix, Corot, Daumier, Millet, Courbet, Manet, Sisley, Monet and Renoir – turned their backs on the officially sanctioned painting of the era, with its academic and neoclassicist style. Yet despite their revolutionary approaches, many of them still adhered to tradition. Highly controversial…

His lasting legacy for the art production of the post-war period up to the present is undisputed and yet enigmatic: in Europe, which had been shattered by two world wars, and where realistic art had fallen into disrepute, Kokoschka remained intrepidly committed to the recognition of figurative art. He adhered to the integral force of an art beyond state propaganda, which is reflected…
